Fujifilm XF56mmF1.2 vs XF90mmF2 – Clash of the titans

Pre-Note

I’ve left the lens information off the description of these photos as I thought it would provide some insight into how close they are. The exif data is imbedded in the files, so I’ll let you try guess which is which.

Introduction

It is guaranteed that this question is going to come up on the forums, Facebook or on my Instagram feed, on a regular basis. It is the ultimate dilemma for Fujifilm users, 56mm or 90mm? It seems to be a bigger issue with Fujifilm than I remember with DSLR land, and I am not 100% sure why. Are all the complaints about APS-C low light performance exaggerated?

These aren’t typical shots I would shoot at high ISO and this wasn’t a planned test. I pulled out my camera for a couple of product shots of the X100F and I must have bumped my ISO to 25600.

The First shot was well overexposed, largely because when using an AD600 Pro, the minimum power at 1/128 was still too powerful for f/16 @ ISO25600.

Updates – 18 April 2018

I’ve updated the article on the 18th April to incorporate some feedback from a shoot I did in Warburton. All positive, so no need for concern. This is primarily surrounding IBIS.

Preface

I’ll be adding more photos as I spend more time with the camera. Unfortunately the last couple of photo shoots I have had to test the camera were children’s birthday parties and I can’t post up the results due to other children being at the event.

I’ll continue to update this review as I spend more time with the camera, along with updating it based on any firmware updates that may improve performance considerably.
